On Africa/Brass, Coltrane isn't revolutionizing Jazz, at least not on the surface of things. He's not taking his music in any radical new directions through experimentation or wild innovation, but rather exploring familiar territory in an unfamiliar manner, taking familiar elements to make an album that's in one sense lean and understated and in another expansive, bold and flamboyant/5.

This is a classic album by John Coltrane. It's his first for the Impulse! record label; he would become readily associated with the label, recording all of his great mature albums for it. Due to Coltrane's prominence in the jazz world, Impulse! would also become an important jazz label during the s and a major documenter of the avant garde.8/10(1).

John Coltrane's debut for the Impulse label was a bit unusual, for the great tenor and his quartet were joined by a medium-sized backup group on Eric Dolphy arrangements of "Africa," "Greensleeves," and "Blues Minor." "Africa" in particular is quite memorable although Coltrane would not pursue any further recordings in this direction in the future, making this a change of pace in his discography.9/
  7. Sharg says:
'Africa/brass’ was the following eighth album where Coltrane’s usual quartet was joined by a larger ensemble, leading to a big-band sound. Tracks: "My Favorite Things" (LP 1).
